Overview

Provenance ("we", "our", "the app") is a food product scanning application. This policy explains how we handle your data.

Information We Collect

Product Scans

When you scan a barcode or search for a product, we store the product information (barcode, name, brand, research results) in our database to serve future lookups. Scans are associated with an anonymous user identifier.

Photos

If you scan a product by taking a photo, the image is sent to our servers for identification. Product images may be stored to display on product pages. Images are processed through Google Cloud Vision for content moderation.

Account Information

If you sign in with Google or Apple, we store your name, email, and authentication identifier solely for account management.

Analytics

We use Firebase Analytics to collect aggregated, anonymized usage data to improve the app. No personally identifiable information is shared with analytics providers.

AI Processing

Product research is performed by Anthropic's Claude AI via our backend servers. Product data (name, barcode, ingredients) is sent to the Anthropic API for analysis. Anthropic does not use this data for model training. No personal user data is sent to the AI.

Data Storage

Data is stored in Google Cloud (Firebase/Firestore) infrastructure located in the United States. Product research data is cached to avoid redundant processing.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share personal data with third parties except as described above for core app functionality.

Data Retention

Product research data is retained indefinitely to serve the community. Account data is retained while your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us.

Children's Privacy

Provenance is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
